The City of Gwinner, in partnership with Valley Senior Services (VSS), is excited to launch a new senior meal site at the Gwinner Community Center (104 N Main St, Gwinner, ND). Beginning December 2, 2025, local adults age 60 and over are invited to enjoy nutritious, home-style lunches every Tuesday through Thursday at 12:00 pm.

More than just a meal, this new offering is designed to bring people together, fostering connection, conversation, and community. Each lunch is prepared following Older Americans Act guidelines by licensed, registered dietitians, ensuring well-balanced, flavorful options that support senior health and well-being.

“We’re thrilled to be expanding into Gwinner,” said Shelley Tollefson, Program Manager with Valley Senior Services. “The city’s strong community support has been instrumental in making this possible. We look forward to providing a place where seniors can nourish their bodies and connect with friends.”

Once open, meal reservations must be made no later than 9:00 am the day of and can be completed in person at the Gwinner Community Center or by calling (701) 678-3815. A $4.00 per-meal donation is suggested, though contributions of any amount are welcomed. No one will be turned away due to an inability or unwillingness to donate. These donations, which remain confidential, help cover the full meal cost of approximately $11.75 and are reinvested directly into the program. Donations can also be made by phone at (701) 293-1440 or online at valleyseniorservices.org/donate-toward-meals-received. Seniors interested in using SNAP benefits toward meals are encouraged to call the VSS Home Office for details.

The new Gwinner meal site is made possible through strong collaboration between Valley Senior Services and local leaders. City staff and council members worked closely with VSS to identify community needs and ensure the site could meet them.

“A senior meal center is so much more than a place to eat. It is a hub of connection, care, and community,” said Jessica Peterson, City Auditor for Gwinner. “In rural areas like ours, where transportation and access to services can be limited, having a local site helps ensure older adults receive regular, balanced meals and stay socially engaged. It is an investment in both health and dignity for those who have shaped our community.”

“This partnership between Valley Senior Services and the City of Gwinner is a meaningful way to support our seniors as they continue to play an active role in our community,” said Kenny Wiederholt, City Council Member. “As a senior myself, I know how valuable it is to have a place to gather, share conversation, and feel connected.”

Whether it’s reconnecting with old friends, meeting someone new, or simply enjoying a hot and healthy lunch, the new meal site offers seniors in Gwinner a welcoming place to gather and thrive.

To register for meals before December 2, please call the Lisbon meal reservation line at (701) 683-3131 and provide your name, phone number, and the dates for which meals are being reserved.  In-person registration will also available at the Gwinner Community Center after December 2.
